"Natural" Bridal Makeup

Let's talk bridal makeup! Bridal makeup is something I thoroughly enjoy doing. I enjoy the entire process from the initial inquiry, the trial, the wedding day, and everything in between. Every once in a while I will speak with a bride and she knows exactly what she wants, but this is quite rare. Most of the time brides will send me photos or their Pinterest board with many different looks they like, but are unsure of  what will look best on them. Outside of those two situations I get one of two request the most ... "natural" makeup, and Kim Kardashian.

So let's first discuss "natural" bridal makeup (we will save the Kim Kardashian look for another post). A bride-to-be may say she doesn't wear much makeup on a day-to-day basis and doesn't want a "cakeface," or she may state she just wants to look like herself. There are also those of you who want "natural" makeup. So in all of these instances, a natural bridal look works best.

First, let's clear up something ... There is no such thing as natural makeup. As a professional and skilled makeup artist, I can give the appearance of someone not wearing makeup, but makeup is definitely still applied. Natural looking bridal makeup would not included things like a red lip, smokey eye, or contoured cheekbones.

Above is a photo of a beautiful bride I had the privilege of working with this past June, Corin. This is a wonderful example of natural looking bridal makeup. Corin is beautiful to begin with, so it was simply my job to enhance her features without distracting from them.

Regardless of your desired look for your wedding, I would be honored to work with you to create the bridal vision you desire :-)

Rockin' A Red Lip

Whether you are a bride-to-be, going out on the town with your girls, or you want a signature look, a red lip is ALWAYS an option. The key to the perfect red lip is finding the right shade for your complexion, and the right formula for you. For example, if you have very fair skin with pink undertones a beautiful cherry red color that has a blue base will look amazing on you. However, a deep wine also looks amazing on those with fair skin. Orange based reds look amazing on those of you with olive skin. Deeper skin tones look great with wine colors and intense reds lip a blue base. Red lip colors can range from bright cherry reds to orange tones and even deep maroon, berry colors.

Formulas for both lipstick and lip gloss, as well as stains, will vary greatly. If you aren't at all concerned about your lip color rubbing off onto something or someone then a lipstick will work. For those of you who aren't particular about the way lipstick feels, try a gloss in a wonderful red shade. For you brides, or those who will be going out and don't want your lip color to end up on everything and everyone, lip stains are perfect!  My favorite red lipsticks are MAC Lady Danger and Make Up For Ever's N44 Diamond Red.

If you're interested in lip glosses that have some staying power, my faves are NARS 413 BLKR Larger Than Life lip gloss and Yves Saint Laurent's Glossy Stain #9. Other red lippies I'm a fan of include Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso & of course OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) liptar in Stalker!

So start searching and find that red lip that works for you! If you need some help, just let me know!

Prom Hair & Makeup

I cannot believe that it is May 2014! Where has this year gone? .... Most of the hair and makeup work I do is primarily bridal, performance based, or editorial. However, during the months of April and May, "prom season" is in full effect :-) I have so much fun working with these gorgeous young ladies and helping them achieve their desired prom look. As with many of my clients I ask them to either create a Pinterest board OR send me photos of looks they like. This year, I have received many photos of  Blake Lively, Khloe Kardashian, as well as lots of Selena Gomez and even Anne Hathaway.

Prom is a great time to experiment with a new look and the perfect time to have fun! There are so many beauty options and as long as you are true to who you are, you won't go wrong. I recently had the privilege to work with a natural redhead who was GORGEOUS! She had very long, thick red hair, blue eyes, and perfect freckles. We had previously discussed her desired look and decided to go with loose curls and a slightly smokey eye.

I know many makeup artist post before & after photos, however for this post I'm going to post "the process" and "the after!" The above is after we curled hair and had already done most of her eye makeup. Before she had arrived I had no idea she had so many freckles. I know many women cover their freckles, but I consistently encourage clients to embrace their beauty. I can't tell you how many times as a makeup artist a photographer or client has wanted me to create freckles! ... So I kept her foundation to a bare minimum by mixing a moisturizer with Make Up For Ever's HD foundation, and allowed her beautiful skin and freckles to show. She is also gifted with full lips and long lashes! ... I mean how much does one person get right?! She was the perfect client and just allowed me to do my job and pamper her. Below is the finished look, before she headed home to get dressed in her blue gown!
